The Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX) has recorded a major milestone, with equity transactions reaching approximately 1 billion birr this week, according to ESX Chief Executive Officer Dr. Tilahun Esmael Kassahun.
Speaking on the progress of Ethiopia’s capital market, the CEO noted that while similar transaction volumes are often achieved within a single day in some neighboring markets, reaching the one-billion-birr mark in a week represents significant progress for Ethiopia’s young exchange.
Dr. Tilahun highlighted that ESX has now operated as an institution for two years, following more than four and a half years of groundwork undertaken through the project’s development phase.
The CEO also disclosed that another company is expected to be listed on the exchange next week, adding to the growing number of issuers accessing the market.
Looking ahead, Dr. Tilahun expressed confidence that between 50 and 60 companies could be listed on ESX within the next one to two years.
“We have the potential, and there are enough companies for that,” he said, underscoring the depth of Ethiopia’s corporate sector and the opportunities for capital market expansion.
The remarks come as Ethiopia continues efforts to deepen its financial sector and build a vibrant capital market capable of mobilizing long-term investment and supporting private-sector growth.
