Every commercial bank in Ethiopia publishes two rates for each currency. The buying rate is what the bank pays you for foreign currency; the selling rateis what it charges when you buy foreign currency from it. The gap between them is the bank’s spread, and it varies from bank to bank, which is why the best rate to sell dollars and the best rate to buy them are usually at two different banks.
The headline figure on this page is the median across every bank quoting that currency, not an average. A single bank quoting well outside the market would drag an average with it; the median holds to where the market actually is.
These are indicative published rates. Banks apply their own limits, fees and branch-level discretion, and the rate you are offered for a large transfer may differ from the board rate shown here. This page is information, not financial advice.
