The Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA) has registered a total of 234,388 ordinary shares of Meba Microfinance Institute S.C., comprising 34,388 existing shares and 200,000 new shares approved for issuance through a rights offer to existing shareholders.

The Authority approved Meba’s Registration Statement in accordance with Article 75 of the Capital Market Proclamation No. 1248/2021 and Articles 4 and 29 of the Public Offer and Trading of Securities Directive No. 1030/2024.

The 200,000 new ordinary shares will be issued at ETB 550 per share, bringing the total value of the rights offer to ETB 110 million. The new shares represent a substantial expansion of Meba’s existing registered share base.

Meba Microfinance Institute commenced operations on August 24, 2024, following its licensing by the National Bank of Ethiopia. The institution is headquartered at Arat Kilo in Addis Ababa and has expanded its operations to locations including Adama and Wolaytta Sodo.

The registration comes as ECMA continues to formalise securities ownership and issuance across Ethiopia’s financial sector. In recent weeks, the Authority has registered securities of several financial institutions, including Hibret Bank, Wegagen Bank, Sidama Bank and Nib Insurance.

Meba’s registration is notable as it extends the securities-registration process into the microfinance sector, broadening participation in Ethiopia’s developing capital-market framework.

ECMA clarified that the registration is intended to notify the public of the securities registration and does not constitute an endorsement of the offer, an offer to sell securities, or a solicitation to purchase securities.

The registration of Meba’s securities also does not constitute a listing on the Ethiopian Securities Exchange. Any future listing would be subject to a separate application and approval process.
