Transactions conducted through Ethio Telecom’s Telebirr platform have surpassed 6.88 trillion birr since the service was launched, according to Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamiru.
Presenting the company’s 2018 fiscal year first-half performance, Frehiwot said Telebirr has delivered strong results, particularly in facilitating digital money transfers and supporting Ethiopia’s Digital Ethiopia agenda.
During the first half of the year alone, 1.94 trillion birr was transferred through the platform. The CEO noted that Telebirr’s customer base has grown to 58.61 million users, with 4.69 million new customers added in the past six months.
Frehiwot also highlighted Ethio Telecom’s efforts to strengthen digital financial services to provide more efficient, modern, accessible, and inclusive solutions. As part of these efforts, more than 16 million customers have accessed loans through Telebirr’s digital credit service.
Telebirr has become a key pillar of Ethiopia’s digital finance ecosystem, supporting cashless transactions and expanding access to financial services across the country.
