The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has released the results of Foreign Exchange Auction No. 24, conducted on June 24, 2026, with USD 100 million allocated to participating banks.
The auction cleared at a marginal rate of 157 birr per U.S. dollar, while the weighted average rate of successful bids also stood at 157 birr/USD. Fourteen banks participated in the auction, with nine securing allocations.
Banks submitted bids totaling USD 160.5 million, significantly lower than the USD 236.3 million recorded in the previous auction held on June 16. The latest results also indicate a slight decline in the exchange rate from Auction No. 23, where the weighted average rate reached 158 birr/USD.
The highest successful bid in the latest auction was 157 birr/USD, while the lowest bid stood at 152 birr/USD. The outcome suggests a moderation in demand for foreign currency among commercial banks and a relatively stable exchange rate environment compared to recent auctions.
The foreign exchange auction mechanism remains a key channel through which the central bank supplies hard currency to the banking sector under Ethiopia’s ongoing market-based foreign exchange regime.
