Fuel prices across Ethiopia have been revised upward following a new adjustment linked to global oil market trends, according to information confirmed by Tikvah Ethiopia and fuel station operators.
Under the updated pricing structure, white diesel is now retailing at 180.46 birr per liter, while gasoline has risen to 167.50 birr per liter. The changes are reportedly being implemented nationwide, with stations already selling at the revised rates.
A letter issued by the Ministry of Trade and Regional Cooperation indicates that the new prices took effect at midnight on April 23, following adjustments based on developments in international oil markets.
According to the official communication, the updated per-liter prices are as follows:
- White diesel: 180.46 birr
- Gasoline: 167.50 birr
- Kerosene: 320.66 birr
- Light black diesel: 170.62 birr
- Heavy black diesel: 167.37 birr
- Jet fuel: 319.76 birr
Field checks conducted in different areas confirm that fuel stations are adhering to the revised pricing. Station employees reported that both gasoline and diesel are being sold at the new rates, with transport operators already passing on the increased costs.
The adjustment comes just a month after a previous fuel price hike, underscoring continued volatility in domestic fuel pricing.
Commenting on the development, Destawe Mekwanant (Dr.), Director General of the Oil and Energy Authority, stated that the latest price adjustment is justified under current market conditions.
The latest increase is expected to have ripple effects across transportation and consumer prices, adding pressure to an already inflation-sensitive economic environment.
