All 20 participating banks secure foreign currency as auction remains undersubscribed by USD 5 million

The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) allocated USD 120 million to commercial banks in its 28th Foreign Exchange Auction held on September 9, 2026, with the auction receiving bids totaling USD 120 million against an allocated amount of USD 125 million.

All 20 participating banks were successful in securing foreign currency, leaving the auction undersubscribed by USD 5 million.

The marginal (cut-off) exchange rate stood at 158.3500 birr per US dollar, while the weighted average rate of successful bids reached 160.5357 birr/USD.

Bids ranged from a low of 158.3500 birr/USD to a high of 160.7556 birr/USD.

According to the NBE, 20 banks participated in the auction, and all 20 were successful participants.

The central bank said the next foreign exchange auction will be held according to the previously announced schedule.
