The Government of Ethiopia and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have signed a USD 71.9 million financing agreement to strengthen climate resilience and food security efforts across vulnerable communities.
The agreement, signed at the Ministry of Finance, will support the Ethiopian component of the Building Resilience for Food and Livelihoods (BREFOL) program. The AfDB is providing the financing in its capacity as an accredited entity of the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
The new funding will complement the ongoing Building Resilience for Food and Nutrition Security (BREFONS) program, scaling up interventions aimed at addressing climate-related risks in pastoral and agro-pastoral areas. The initiative builds on previous Bank-supported projects, including the regional Drought Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods Program.
Under the program, resources will be directed toward climate-resilient infrastructure and services, including the construction of water facilities, development of community irrigation schemes, livestock infrastructure, and renewable energy solutions. The project will also introduce climate-smart technologies, digital advisory services, and improved access to climate finance.
Of the total USD 71.9 million financing package, USD 25.64 million will be provided as a grant, while USD 46.30 million will be extended as a loan.
The agreement was signed by Finance Minister Ahmed Shide and Dr. Alex Mubiru, Director General for the East Africa Business Delivery Office at the African Development Bank.
The program is expected to enhance adaptive capacity, improve food and livelihood security, and strengthen resilience to climate shocks in some of Ethiopia’s most climate-vulnerable regions.
