The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) has officially launched its new digital savings and loan platform, CBE Beje, at the bank’s new headquarters in Addis Ababa.
This marks a major step in the bank’s effort to expand credit access through digital channels.
The CBE Beje Digital Savings and Loan Service enables customers to access collateral-free loans ranging from 500 to 150,000 birr through the CBE Birr Plus app, based on their monthly salary. To qualify, customers must receive their salaries through CBE Birr.
“The service is designed to bring credit access closer to every household,” said Ato Ephraim, adding that more than 1.6 billion birr in loans have already been disbursed through CBE Beje in the past two months.
The platform was initially piloted among CBE employees beginning in January 2024. Following successful testing and extensive awareness campaigns across central and district levels, the service is now being rolled out to the public.
So far, the bank has signed agreements with 478 institutions to process salary payments via CBE Birr, with employees from 83 of those institutions already benefiting from CBE Beje.
CBE said it plans to further expand digital credit options to meet growing customer demand and encouraged both government and private institutions to collaborate with the bank to make their employees eligible for the service.
