Awash Bank has signed a new strategic partnership with Mastercard to help strengthen Ethiopia’s digital economy. The deal is expected to speed up the use of modern digital payment systems across the country.
Through this collaboration, Awash Bank will use Mastercard’s global technology and experience, while Mastercard will benefit from Awash Bank’s strong local presence and large customer base. Together, they aim to introduce new and innovative payment solutions for both consumers and businesses in Ethiopia.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Awash Bank’s Chief Digital Banking Officer, Mr. Kefyalew Shiferaw, said the partnership is built on “shared ambitions and mutual trust.” He explained that the agreement will support the growth of Ethiopia’s digital payment ecosystem and help move the country toward a more modern financial system.
Mastercard also highlighted the importance of the deal. Mr. Shehryar Ali, Senior Vice President and Country Manager for Mastercard in East Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands, said Awash Bank plays a key role not just in Ethiopia, but in the wider East African region. He expressed confidence that the partnership will help improve financial inclusion and promote digital transformation.
The agreement marks another major step in Ethiopia’s shift toward digital finance, offering new opportunities for businesses, customers, and the banking sector.
