The Ethiopian Lottery Service has announced the revocation of licenses for all sports betting companies operating in the country, effective December 6, 2018.
In an official statement, the Service said the decision was taken in line with directives issued by the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the regulatory authority granted to the Lottery Service by law. The measure applies equally to all betting companies, including those previously banned.
According to the statement, the revocation follows a comprehensive national review of the betting and financial sector, which uncovered widespread illegal practices, violations of licensing agreements, and illicit money transfers posing risks to national security.
As part of the directive, all sports betting activities—whether physical, digital, or otherwise—must be immediately suspended. Deposit gateways are required to cease operations, no new bets may be accepted, and all server data, financial records, and user information must be preserved and kept confidential. The Service warned that any destruction, alteration, or concealment of evidence will be punishable under criminal law.
Financial institutions, including banks, payment instrument issuers, and payment system operators, have also been instructed to block betting agencies from conducting any sales or payment-related activities with immediate effect.
The Ethiopian Lottery Service stated that it will strictly enforce the decision in cooperation with relevant government institutions and warned that any party violating the directive will be held legally accountable.
