Economic Roadmap for the Next Five Years
During its 46th regular session, Ethiopia’s Council of Ministers gave the green light to a five-year economic and fiscal plan spanning 2026 to 2030. This roadmap is designed to steer the nation’s budgeting and policy efforts, focusing on boosting government income, managing public spending responsibly, and fostering a steady economic environment.
Securing International Funding
The Council also backed two financial deals with global partners. A $49.55 million loan from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa will fund initiatives to create jobs for young people through agro-industrial parks. Additionally, a SDR 45.1 million loan from the International Development Association will improve healthcare access for women and girls, both agreements featuring low fees and extended grace periods.
New Rules for Employment and Agriculture
The session also saw the approval of a fee structure for foreign employment agencies, set by the Ministry of Labor and Skills, to cover operational costs while remaining affordable, effective once published in the Federal Negarit Gazette. A proposed law to protect the rights and safety of Ethiopians working abroad was sent to the House of People’s Representatives for review. Lastly, a new agricultural regulation to enhance pest control and ensure safe trade in farm products was also forwarded to the House, aligning with international standards.
