Abay Bank S.C. has officially launched its 15th Anniversary celebrations, marking a decade and a half of remarkable growth, innovation, and nationwide service in Ethiopia’s banking industry.
Speaking at a press event held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Addis Ababa, CEO Ato Yehuala Gessesse reflected on the Bank’s journey from its humble beginnings in 2010 with an initial capital of Birr 125.8 million and 823 shareholders. Today, that number has grown to over 4,500 shareholders, with a paid-up capital of Birr 7 billion—underscoring the trust and long-term vision that has fueled Abay Bank’s success.
Since securing its license from the National Bank of Ethiopia on July 14, 2010, and officially launching operations later that year, Abay Bank has grown into one of the key players in Ethiopia’s financial sector. It now operates 555 branches nationwide, offering financial services to millions.
By the end of the 2024/25 fiscal year, the Bank’s total assets reached over Birr 91 billion. Deposits rose by 37% to Birr 72 billion, while loans and advances hit Birr 47.4 billion. The Bank’s annual income also nearly doubled, increasing by 95% to Birr 16.2 billion.
Highlighting its push toward digital transformation, Abay Bank revealed that 57% of all transactions are now fully digital, reflecting its ongoing investment in technology to enhance customer convenience and operational efficiency.
Beyond financial performance, the Bank emphasized its commitment to social responsibility. In the past fiscal year alone, it contributed over Birr 50 million to initiatives supporting communities across Ethiopia. With more than 10,000 employees—both permanent and outsourced—Abay has also played a significant role in job creation and capacity development in the sector.
CEO Ato Yehuala noted that the 15th Anniversary celebration will not be a one-day affair, but rather a months-long campaign designed to engage the public, inspire employees, and recognize key stakeholders. Activities will kick off with traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremonies across all branches, complemented by themed decorations and commemorative displays.
Additional events planned include tree planting, blood donation drives, multi-channel awareness campaigns, and a grand gala scheduled for November 2025.
As Abay Bank looks ahead, its leadership remains focused on strengthening its footprint, embracing innovation, and contributing to inclusive economic growth in Ethiopia.
